Ruth DeWitt Bukater is Rose's widowed mother, who arranges her daughter's engagement to Cal to maintain her family's high-class status. She loves her daughter but believes that social position is more important. She scorns Jack, even though he saved her daughter's life. When Rose chooses to go save Jack instead of leaving on a life boat with her mother, Ruth does not understand her decision. She survives the sinking of Titanic by escaping on a life boat with other first-class passengers.
